Hedging has limitations

A hedge is intended to offset a specified exposure, subject to its assumptions and contract terms. It can fail to track the original holding, create additional costs, reduce gains, or require collateral during an adverse price path. The word “hedged” does not establish that capital is protected against every event.

The CFTC's virtual-currency risk advisory explains that leveraged derivatives can amplify losses and may require further funding. A small deposit should not be confused with small economic exposure.

Different risks require different questions

Price risk, liquidity, custody, counterparty performance, operational access, and legal rights are distinct concerns. A derivative payoff does not automatically cover an exchange failure or a compromised wallet. A token's transferability does not establish a right to immediate redemption. A stable reported value does not establish an executable exit price.
